A dry side dish quite commonly made for lunch and dinner besides ofcourse for onam sadya.

Coconut Oil / cooking oil – 2 tbsp
Cabbage – 2 cups (grated or chopped fine)
Green chili – 1 -2 nos (slit length wise)
Curry leaves – 4-5 nos
Mustard seeds – 1 tsp
Husked black beans (urad dal) – 1 tsp
Grated coconut – 2 tbsp
Turmeric powder – ½ tsp
Salt to taste

  1. In a skillet heat oil and add mustard seeds and wait till it sputters
  2. Add black beans and fry for few seconds
  3. Now add cabbage, green chili and curry leaves
  4. Sprinkle little water, add turmeric, salt, stir and close the lid
  5. In between keep stirring
  6. Cabbage will get a glassy appearance when its done
  7. Sprinkle grated coconut and mix well
  8. Serve

* you can also use long string beans instead of cabbage for this preparation
